Final Project Proposal

I was stuck for a long time thinking of this project.  I was browsing on amazon on my cramped desk in my dorm room and thought of ways to declutter my desk.  A computer monitor stand came to mind.
After browsing that, this is about the best option they had and I was thinking I could build one in this class.
I drew up this concept.  A couple things I wanted were multiple levels, so I could put my keyboard or something on the middle level.  The second thing is I always need a place to put my phone on my desk and charge, so I wanted to add a phone stand with a hole under it for a charging cord.  I wanted it to be big and spacious.  I hope to also add some sort of led feature to it.  Possibly a led strip under the front middle to help light the desk late at night.

Where the idea for the phone stand came from (thingiverse).

This is the mock-up I sketched in Inventor.  It is a rough draft and the dimensions are not where they need to be.  The components that make up the desk are the 4 legs, the 2 shelfs, and the phone stand. For materials I am kind of unsure at this point.  I know that I need something sturdy for the legs, possibly wood or aluminum.  For the 3d printing aspect I can really 3d print any of these pieces.  Possibly the top shelf so that I can 3d print the phone stand right onto it.

I know that this seems like a simple make, but I think that I can find a way to make it unique.  I am always thinking of ways I could take things a step further.  I could possibly add a u shape design or create something cool to be the heads of the legs on the top of the table. I could possibly add a side hanger for headphones or a side attachment for speakers.  I could also add an adjustable height feature.  The only things I am worrying about is if it will be to large or if the scale of the project is too small.

  1. The stand itself is a good idea, I would just look into how much weight that the materiel being used can handle because you wouldn't want the computer crashing down. With enough supports the design should be solid.

    1. thanks for the idea tony didn't even think of that. I will definantly look into that thanks!

    2. I agree with Tony as far as the weight limits for your design would go. This would be a really useful project, but I think you might need to (B) build upon your design plans if you're planning to use 3D-printing for all of the components, because that might limit the size of the parts you're planning to create.

  3. I think that this is a great idea for a final project! You'd have to print it in multiple parts for sure, but I think designing something that can be pieced together properly after it is printed adds an extra challenge to the project that makes for perfect final project material. I (Agree With) this proposal and I am interested to see how you go about creating the final product!

  4. (Build Upon)

I like the design of this, but I think more thought needs to be given to the actual structural strength of the stand (cuz nothing takes up desk space like chunks of shattered screen. XD). We have all those sheet metal tools available to us, so honestly I don't think you need to change too much about you design, you just need to reinforce it somehow.

  5. Matt,

We have lots of materials in the sculpture lab you could take a look at. My first thought is using wood for the shelves, and threaded rod for the "legs"... but there are many options. Remind me in class and I can show you some of the tools and materials that might be helpful for you.

  6. this is a great idea. i like the design of you monitor stand with the incorporation with a phone stand. I cant wait to see how it all turns out.

  7. I like the practicality of this idea, definitely. Something I'd (B)uild upon, though, is your idea about having a second shelf to put your keyboard on. Would that shelf be able to slide out so you can type from it, or would it be more of just a storage area type of thing? Just something to think about, but I like your idea a lot.

    1. Probably just a storage area for the keyboard. It would be to hard to type with your wrist that far in the air.

  8. I really like the idea, but like everyone else has said, I think you should (B)uild upon by looking into other materials might be a better idea than 3D printing depending on the weight the stand will be holding. I like the incorporation of a phone stand as well since I think it'll come in quite handy.

  9. I think this is a great idea you can Build Upon. As others said you may need to consider what material would hold the weight best. You may even want to consider a center peg/leg on the bottom in the middle so that the weight will be more evenly distributed. Regardless this concept is really practical for making some work space on your desk.

    1. a leg at the bottom is a good idea to support more weight. I would have to look in to the most efficient way to support this weight. Thanks

  11. Solid idea to (B)uild upon. I've always wanted a monitor stand myself, so i might steal it from you on thingiverse once you're finished. I was thinking about the phone stand idea and while it would be cool to have it printed right onto the top part of the stand, it might get in the way in the future if you get a new monitor for example. For that reason, i would print it separately and find a way for it to attach to the stand. Great idea!

    1. Yeah I like the idea of an attachable piece.

  12. (A)gree its a really useful idea but you should design something to make it stand out from normal stands.
